Who's Having Breast Enlargement?
Perhaps you've always had small, underdeveloped breasts. Perhaps pregnancy and nursing have given your breasts a shrunken or atrophied appearance. Or maybe significant weight loss has affected the size and shape of your breasts. Women who fall into any of these categories may be good candidates for breast augmentation. You should also be in good physical condition and be well informed so that your expectations are realistic. It is important to note that women considering silicone gel implants must be at least 22 years old, while saline implants are available for women age 18 and older.
Saline or Silicone – A Choice for Reading and Lancaster Breast Enlargement
In addition to the size you desire, we are glad to discuss the type of implant that will be best for you. Both saline and silicone gel may have advantages depending upon your unique breast characteristics.
- Saline implants have a silicone shell that is inflated and filled with sterile saline (salt water) solution. While this implant type is very durable, in the event of rupture the saline is harmlessly absorbed by the body and the implant deflates, clearly signaling that a rupture has occurred.
- Silicone gel implants have a silicone shell that is pre-filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel, and vary in shape, profile, volume, and thickness. Silicone implants can produce a more natural feeling and looking breast and can be a particularly good choice for women with minimal breast tissue.
What to Expect From Your Procedure
After the type of implant has been selected, we'll also discuss the method of insertion best for you. While inframammary incisions-just under the breast at the crease where your breast meets the chest wall-are most common, we also offer transaxillary or armpit incisions as well as periareolar incisions made where the nipple meets the breast skin. Rest assured that Dr. Schlechter makes every effort to be certain that the incision is placed so that the resulting scars will be as inconspicuous as possible.
Breast augmentation surgery is performed using IV sedation and takes about one hour. After the incision is made, a pocket is created either under the breast tissue or under the pectoralis (chest) muscle. Once again, this choice will be thoroughly discussed with you so that the right one is made for your unique anatomy. The pocket is made just large enough to accommodate the implant and then the implant is positioned to give a very attractive and natural result.
Following your surgery, you'll be given detailed instructions about postoperative care. While strenuous physical activity is limited for several weeks, most patients are back to work and back to their daily tasks within a few days.
